A bipartisan coalition of former Ohio State Attorneys General—including James Petro, Marc Dann, Nancy Rogers, and Richard Cordray—has filed an amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to deny the federal government’s request to immediately terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants.
The brief lays out the powerful economic contributions Haitian TPS holders have made to Ohio communities, particularly in Springfield, where their arrival helped revive a once-declining local economy. According to the filing, Haitian TPS holders in central Ohio alone contribute an estimated $21 million annually in state and local taxes and $160 million to Ohio’s economy each year.
The former AGs also push back hard on false narratives about crime. As the brief notes, Haitian immigrants have far lower incarceration rates than both other legal immigrant groups and native-born Americans—and local leaders confirm that Haitians are more often the victims of crime than perpetrators.
In the words of current Ohio Governor Mike DeWine—himself a former AG—stripping Haitians of TPS would be a “blow to the economy” and a “blow to the state.”
